Ranking the NFL divisions: The South rises again

    by David Gladow, NOLA.com
    Tuesday November 18, 2008, 12:40 PM

Can anyone tell Jake Delhomme what the top division in football is?

Another week, another shakeup in the NFL division rankings.

These rankings fluctuate more than your average politician's political views.

But in this case, it might be warranted. You see, the supposed depth of the NFC East is beginning to show its true colors, and those colors aren't pretty. Certainly the Giants are as great a team as ever, but it is now pretty apparent that the rest of the division is trailing New York by a substantial margin.

    NFL Week 11 in Review

    by David Gladow, NOLA.com
    Sunday November 16, 2008, 11:50 PM

Jonathan Vilma and the Saints defense had their moments of greatness against Kansas City.

Sometimes you get the help you need, and sometimes you don't.

The New Orleans Saints did what they needed to do, pulling out a 10-point win in Kansas City, but for a team on the verge of being eliminated from the playoffs a matter of weeks into November, help is always needed.

The Saints got some help in the form of losses by fellow playoff contenders Minnesota, Chicago, Washington and Atlanta (and a tie for Philadelphia). On the negative side, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Dallas, New York, and Green Bay all won.

    You can't win them all.

    Who is the NFL MVP?

    by David Gladow, NOLA.com
    Wednesday November 12, 2008, 2:38 PM

Despite all the Saints' problems, Drew Brees is having an MVP-type season.

Lately, there has been a lot of talk about who the NFL MVP should be.

In New Orleans, this is pertinent because of Drew Brees and the season he is having. And I suppose I get that the national pundits feel the need to beat the crowd on the NFL most valuable player discussion and get their two cents in.

That doesn't mean I have to like it though.

Ranking the NFL divisions: New York Giants keeping the East on top

    by David Gladow, NOLA.com
    Tuesday November 11, 2008, 12:18 PM

Brandon Jacobs and the Giants have the NFC East on top of the football world.

When putting together a power ranking of the NFL divisions, it's important to not only look at the depth of the league, but also to weigh its strength. Especially at the top.

Arguably no division in football is stronger at the top than the NFC East, where the 8-1 New York Giants roost. The presence of a true Super Bowl contender shouldn't be glossed over, either, as the NFL currently has a lack of those.

Tennessee (9-0) is another one. Carolina (7-2) might be. But other than those three, the NFL has a bunch of 6-3 teams eager to simply make the playoffs, not necessarily win the whole thing.

    Indy lands 2012 Super Bowl

    by Jimmy Smith, The TImes-Picayune.

ATLANTA - Indianapolis, which lost out last year to Dallas for the 2011 Super Bowl, was rewarded for its perseverance on Tuesday when NFL owners voted to hold the 2012 game in the Colts' new Lucas Oil Stadium.

    NOLA.com NFL Power Rankings (Final)

    by David Gladow
    Friday February 08, 2008, 3:50 PM

Michael Strahan has climbed the mountain, and he likes the view from the top.
Team of destiny? Let's just say I don't subscribe to that basic concept. There were some strange goings-on that allowed the New York Giants to even get to this point in the first place, but destiny? I'm not ready to go that far.

In the end though, you have to hand it to the Giants for finding a way to beat the unbeatable and defeat the 18-0 New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. The game wasn't always pretty, but was it ever going to be? The Giants were not going to win it by throwing rainbows all over the field. They were going to win it by making it a slugfest ... and that's just what they did in a 17-14 victory.

Which leaves us in the odd scenario of the Patriots having been "out-patrioted" - beaten at their own game. The scrappy Giants fought and clawed their way to a dramatic win over a superior opponent ... which is exactly how the Patriots made a name for themselves in the first place. Does this make the Giants the "new" Patriots? Perhaps not just yet, but you've still got to give them their due: When it mattered most, they came out on top. They are the best team in the NFL.

NOLA.com NFL Power Rankings (Week 21)

    by David Gladow
    Friday February 08, 2008, 3:49 PM

Eli Manning has the Giants pointed in the right direction.
With the Giants in the Super Bowl (thanks to a dramatic 23-20 overtime victory in Green Bay), it might be tempting to think they got in over some more deserving teams. Any idiot can come along and say that the better teams lost.

I am not just any idiot.

I am a supreme idiot. Therefore, I choose to believe the Giants are just as good as their January winning streak indicates. Put the undefeated Pats No. 1 for now, but the Giants have earned the right to be No. 2. That's more than the folks from Green Bay, Indianapolis or Dallas can say.
