$2 BILLION BLUEPRINT WINS BESE'S APPROVAL

by (Exerpts from Thursday, November 13, 2008 By Sarah Carr)
    Thursday November 13, 2008, 7:39 AM

Louisiana's board of education unanimously approved a $2 billion school facilities plan for New Orleans, paving the way for the largest school building boom in the city's history.

This is a "proud moment for the state and a proud moment for the city," said State Superintendent Paul Pastorek. He added that with Wednesday's vote, "This is real. It's ready to go. It's boots on the ground. . . . For all the talk about recovery, this is it."

The plan dedicates about $700 million toward the renovation and construction of about 30 campuses in the first, five-year phase. The rest of the plan will extend another decade and cost up to $1.3 billion, although officials still need to find much of the money to make it happen. They have about $700 million for the first phase in hand.

Since the Orleans Parish School Board approved the plan last Thursday, the vote from the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education was the final hurdle.

Fashionista Russell Simmons sparks fashion fire with inner city youth in New Orleans

Fashion icon Russell Simmons led on hands-on, how-to seminar on the workings of the fashion industry as part of Hiram Smith's first Fashion Lab of the season. The at-capacity event is part of a program instituted last year for inner-city youth in New Orleans by Smith's company, HiramStyle, LLC. Simmons, the entertainment mogul and philanthropist who parlayed his dominance in hip hop music culture from Def Jam Records to an empire which included highly successful urban clothing lines -- best know in fashion for Phat Farm, Baby Phat and Run Athletics brands -- told the youth that nothing was beyond their accomplishment.

Principal Bridgette B. Frick, McMain Secondary School

"There is no better place than where I am , and no better time than now to make a difference."

    Greetings:

Eleanor McMain Secondary School is an institution comprised of a diverse population of students in grades 7th-12th. Our mission is to provide a safe environment, rigorous curriculum and meaningful learning experiences for all students. At McMain, students are our priority and the administrators, faculty and staff has pledged to do 'Whatever It Takes" to maximize academic achievement and foster growth and development in all students.

Our students are offered a variety of academic courses which include Honors, Gifted and Advanced Placement. The dynamics of our school operates as a middle school component, ninth grade academy and senior high school, however, we are one family united in a common cause in quality education and academic success.

At McMain, we believe that school is a place where one should learn to study and be prepared to deal with reality in order to manipulate society with confidence and competence. School is not a place for mediocrity, complacency or negligence. We believe that school is a place where we must do all we can to enhance students readiness to take charge of the world. The McMain Family-- our parents, students, administrators, teachers, faculty and staff strive daily to accomplish this goal.
